Defense Minister Rajnath Singh will launch a website on October 14 that will allow citizens to contribute to the Armed Forces Battle Casualties Welfare Fund (AFBCWF), the ministry announced on Wednesday.


The gateway - "Maa Bharati Ke Sapoot" (MBKS) - will begin with a ceremony to be held at the National War Memorial complex here, the Ministry of Defense said in a statement. AFBCWF is a three-pronged fund that provides immediate relief to the relatives and dependents of those injured in the act.


"Although the Government of India has introduced a large number of welfare programs for soldiers martyr or injured during active military service, there has been a strong public reaction to requests from from community leaders, business leaders or corporate leaders, to contribute to the cause of the welfare of soldiers and their families," the statement said. The website was created to help patriotic Indians participate in this worthy cause, the ministry said.


Actor Amitabh Bachchan graciously agreed to be a "goodwill ambassador", he said.
